Our Journey Since 1998
We are particularly proud of the growth of Smart Five. Starting as one of the smallest channel partners in Southern Africa, we grew to become the distributor’s largest regional channel partner, measured by annual spend. We retained that position for more than a decade until the measurement programme was discontinued. Smart Five has since grown from a South African card-printing business into a specialist supplier with a long-standing customer network built around practical expertise and dependable support across the region.
Our Journey Since 1998

1998
From humble beginnings and a dream to bring the best printing solutions to the world, this is when the magic started: The birth of Smart Five.
2002
Since the business’s humble beginnings in 1998, by 2002 Smart Five was printing cards as a bureau and offering pre-printed cards.
2007
By 2007 we’d developed our first website (way back in 2004 – we do love technology!), and expanded our network beyond the borders of South Africa. We were now exporting our products and services into Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Botswana. We also started participating in exhibitions, our first public showcase!
2014
By now we had built our own premises (from which we still operate), were importing our own range of blank cards (since 2012) and had our own show stand.
We also became certified as support on all Datacard products and rolled out our second website to the world.
It was a busy few years!
2022
It was time to expand our offering to include other major brands. Due to our proven track record, we were welcomed with open arms into the Evolis card printer stable. We have since grown to become one of their few Gold suppliers in the field and plan to move up the supplier excellence ladder to achieve a Gold+ status in the near future.
The launching of IDaaS
We move with the times and keep evolving with technology as the needs of our clients change. In 2025, we introduced the third variation of our online home to the digital world and welcomed the introduction of the long-anticipated proprietary IDaaS Program (ID as a Service) to you (find out more here). This is the first cloud offering of its kind in the world, and we believe it will prove to be the most sought-after program in the years to come. This represents a major step forward in the way we deliver card-printing solutions, combining cloud technology with Smart Five’s established support model.
