All the ribbons for the SP-range of printers are fitted with a RF (Radio Frequency) transponder that signals the printer the type of ribbon being installed. This allows for auto-ribbon initialisation and configuration without user intervention.
The printers are smart-ribbon-use enabled for monochrome ribbons which means that the printer only forward ribbon where data is to be printed on the card. This fantastic ribbon-saver feature allows for yields far greater that the published yield.
Datacard build the range of printers with large ribbon yield in the design of the machine hence giving you as much as 4 times more prints per ribbon that other models.
All the ribbons in the SP-range comes as a KIT: meaning the cleaning cost is already included in the cost of the ribbon (seperate cleaning kits are available for extreme conditions. If you were to do a cost comparison/analysis on these ribbons versus the rivals (other major manufacturers) you'll find that the SP-range runs at the lowest cost per card in the market today.
Specially designed ribbons, for optimal use on duplex (duel sided) printer models (SP55 and SP75), are available to save on printing cost.
For the ribbon illiterates: Ribbons are coded according to its make-up of colours. For instance a Black ribbon would be shown as K (not to confuse with blue) a colour ribbon would be coded as YMC as it is made with consecutive panels of Yellow (Y), Magenta (M) and Cyan (C). A ribbon coded with YMCKT means consecutive panels of yellow, magenta, cyan, black and a Topcoat (T) - some manufactures call the topcoat (sealing layer) an OVERLAY and will print: YMCKO. The special ribbon YMCKT-KT would mean colour on one side and Black (K) with Topcoat (T) on the reverse side. These ribbons are only used on duplex printers.
